Preparation

  1. Step 1

    Roughly cut up the apples without peeling or coring them and place them in a heavy saucepan with the water.

  2. Step 2

    Cover and cook slowly, until the apples are soft, about 20 minutes.

  3. Step 3

    Force the apples through a sieve into a bowl. If desired, sweeten the applesauce to taste with honey.

I think pure maple syrup (just a little) would give lovely notes to this in place of honey. Now I know what to do with my excess apples!

This was easy and needs no added sweetener. Some cinnamon however was excellent.

The sieve part didn’t work at all, would have needed a food mill. Next time would leave apples in very large chunks (cut each apple in thirds) to make it easier to get the skin out, as they mashed easily.

Cooked with a small amount of sugar, 2 TBSP of apple cider vinegar, a little lemon peel and a cinnamon stick. Don’t add 1/2 c of water for every pound of apples if making more. It gets to be too much liquid. I put through food mill. Good!
