Sean Josephs created this spicy-sweet cocktail of bourbon, maple syrup, ginger beer and lime juice to serve at his now-closed barbecue restaurants, Maysville and Char No. 4. It’s great on its own or alongside a pile of spicy barbecue pulled pork. If you prefer your drinks on the not-so-sweet side, add just a touch of maple syrup, taste, then add more as needed. —Florence Fabricant

  1. Step 1

Combine lime juice, bourbon and syrup to taste in a small pitcher or cocktail shaker. If possible, let mixture chill in refrigerator or freezer until very cold.

Pour over ice in a rocks glass and top with ginger beer. Depending on the sweetness of the ginger beer, you may want to add a little more lime juice. Garnish with a lime slice.

I turned 21 tonight, and am typing this at 2a.m. while buzzed and/or drunk, while making tons of typos (being fixed while happening). This was my first drink, and I loved it! Thanks.

If you make a Nor'easter using this recipe, you'll never have a second. We basically use the proportions to make two drinks and a little more ginger beer (always Fever Tree).

I love this cocktail but if I made it with 4 ounces of bourbon you'd have to take me to the hospital. I just reduce the bourbon and keep the other portions the same.

@Anne I think they made a mistake. My husband uses 4oz of ginger beer and 2 oz of bourbon.

This has become our post Thanksgiving through Christmas holiday season drink since 2020. I mistakenly bought fever tree ginger beer—I strongly recommend Q since it has a bit of cayenne and that tiny bit of heat counters the syrup superbly!

Make with GIN - "Old Vermonter" (my fav) or skip the citrus and bubbles, add splash of bitters and it's a Maple Old Fashioned. Very versatile this drink thing.
