Ingredients
- Peanut butter
- 2slices white or wheat sandwich bread
- Fruit jam or preserves, such as strawberry or grape
- ½ tablespoon unsalted butter, plus more as needed
- Salt (optional)
Preparation
- Step 1
Spread a thin layer of peanut butter on one piece of bread. Spread a thin layer of jam on the second piece. Sandwich the slices together.
- Step 2
In a medium skillet, warm half the butter over medium. Once nearly melted, add the sandwich. Slide the bread around to absorb the butter, adding more butter if the pan is dry. Cook until golden brown, 1 to 2 minutes, adjusting the heat as needed to avoid burning.
- Step 3
Flip the sandwich, add the remaining butter and swirl the bread to coat. Cook until golden brown, 1 to 2 minutes. Sprinkle lightly with salt if using, then cut in half and eat right away.

I am 77 years old, and my mother used to make these for us on our primitive little electronic sandwich toaster. If you’ve never had one, they are even more decadent in old age. Try them! Probably the only time I enjoy a glass of milk these days!
Grilled peanut butter and banana is also pretty fabulous!
Why would you chase the butter around the pan with the sandwich? Just butter the outside of the bread, and no need to add butter to the pan. No fuss -- no moving the sandwich. Grill each side for a few minutes. This is how I make grilled cheese and it works great. Pro tip (to keep your hands clean): Butter the first piece, lay down butter-side up; butter 2nd side, and place butter-side down on bottom piece. Apply PB&J to inside of top piece, which is now on top.
When I’m too lazy to do this, I just toast the bread first and let the residual heat do it’s thing
Game changer! How is it I have never heard of this? Move over grilled cheese!
Grilled peanut butter and chocolate chip on brioche. Go ahead — add a scoop of ice cream.
