Finally found a use for the last of the tamarind paste, and adding the two together... brilliant!
NOW I know what to do with that dreadful USA SWEETENED (gasp )tomato sauce with the appalling name of : "ketchup" that none of my freinds can ever be coxed into eating...with ANYTHING. Brilliant! HERE the inwanted sweetness inj the ketchup does a neat yin/yang number with the curiously 'sour' taste of the near-forgotten tamarind sauce at the back of my frig!
Although we didn't think the tamarind ketchup was a good match for the chapli burgers as the recipe suggests (too sweet and tangy; clashed with yogurt sauce), it's a very good and useful condiment. We will try it as a glaze or sauce for grilling almost any meat, and it's great for dipping potato fries -- especially sweet potato.
Maggi brand makes a tamarind ketchup that's sometimes sold at Indian grocery stores. It's quite tasty and we keep it on hand for samosa and other snacks.
We had friends over for a grilled dinner and I added this to the condiments bar. Having never cared for ketchup I made this up on a whim as an alternative and am glad I did. It's good on so many things. One of these days I'll actually try it on chapli burgers!
i made this and, gotta admit, i wasn't impressed; it was the lesser of the two condiments for the burgers. i used tamarind paste (as in, i soaked a block of tamarind and kept what made it through the strainer) next time i'll try more of the tamarind, or use tamarind concentrate (jarred), and/or add some chili sauce to it so: it was ok, and definitely better than standard ketchup, but, maybe i'm not a ketchup person? (i don't have much of a sweet tooth) give it a try though
